Most setup trouble is order trouble. Cameras go up on walls before they have ever met the app, the hub gets plugged in last instead of first, and the batteries take the blame. Here is the sequence — and why the drill comes out only at the very end.

TWO LINKS, FAILING INDEPENDENTLY — THE APP SHOWS A SEPARATE READOUT FOR EACH
Blink sells two kinds of camera and they take different routes onto a network. Battery cameras speak to the small hub above — the Sync Module. Plug-in cameras can join the Wi-Fi alone. Everything in the range connects on the 2.4 GHz band.

The line-up is revised from time to time; the packaging states what each kit requires. Video doorbells follow their own procedure and are covered separately.
A Blink account is created inside the app: an email address, a verification code sent to it, and a phone number for sign-in codes. That account is the spine of the system — every camera, module, and setting hangs from it, and a new phone picks the whole system up again simply by signing in.
During account creation the app offers to link a separate Amazon account. The offer can be skipped. It matters only if a storage plan is bought through Amazon, since a plan purchased there cannot be activated without the link.
No account of any kind is ever created, accessed, or handled through this website.
The Blink Home Monitor app is published for phones and tablets running iOS, Android, and Fire OS, and comes from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or the Amazon Appstore. Those three storefronts are the entire official supply.
THE ENTIRE OFFICIAL SUPPLY, AND WHAT SITS OUTSIDE IT
No desktop application or browser viewer is distributed for Windows or macOS. Software calling itself a Blink app for PC did not come from the manufacturer, whatever its download page claims — and an account password does not belong in it.
Once systems are linked, live pictures can also be called up on certain Alexa display devices. But the phone app is where setup happens.
The module is the bridge between battery cameras and the router, and it joins the system before any camera does. It draws power over USB, carries its serial number on the base, and is added in the app as the first device of a new system. The app reads that serial from the label or its code, then walks through joining the module to the 2.4 GHz network.
Placement deserves a moment. The module needs a solid link to the router and a solid link to every camera, so somewhere central to the eventual camera positions usually beats the shelf right beside the router. On the current Sync Module 2, a USB flash drive in the port gives the system local clip storage — the alternative to a cloud plan.
What follows restates the maker's published documentation in plainer words. The leaflet in the box and the app's own screens remain the authority.
THE COMPARTMENT HOLDS BOTH THE POWER AND THE IDENTITY
Pairing indoors beside the router means that any failure at this stage is a pairing question rather than a placement question. That single distinction saves a great deal of circular effort.
Look again at the diagram at the top: two links, drawn separately because they fail separately. The app shows a readout for each, and those two readouts are the whole argument for mounting last.
TWO READOUTS, TWO DIFFERENT STORIES
Carry the working camera to the exact spot it will guard. Hold it there. Watch the bars. Strong readings at the real position, with the door closed, is the green light. Weak readings mean moving the camera or the module now, while both are still loose in your hands.
HEIGHT, ANGLE, AND THE ONE DIRECTION TO AVOID
Only then the hardware: roughly head height to three metres, angled slightly downward, out of easy reach, and not facing the sun at any hour of the day. The battery models are built for weather, though a spot with some shelter extends everything's life. Kits ship with screw mounts; strap and clamp mounts exist for rented walls and drainpipes.
One placement to avoid entirely: indoors, aimed through a window. The reason is below.
These cameras carry their own light source — infrared, invisible to the eye. When a scene goes dark the illuminator floods it with light the sensor can read, and the image turns monochrome, because infrared carries brightness without colour. A faint red glow visible up close on some units is this system working, not a fault.
An outdoor scene needs the camera on the outdoor side. The pane hands the infrared straight back to the lens, and the camera records a bright reflection of itself instead of the garden. The small recording indicator light is part of the design; the maker's documentation describes its behaviour and settings model by model.
Four questions about the equipment you bought — not about anything going wrong with it. Each answer adds a line to the summary, so you can see which parts of this guide apply to your kit and skip the rest. Everything happens on your own screen: nothing is sent anywhere, nothing is recorded, and there is nothing to sign up for.
Where a router broadcasts two network names, the one marked 5G belongs to the 5 GHz band. Blink equipment holds to 2.4 GHz, whose longer waves carry further and pass through masonry more willingly — at the cost of raw speed, which a short motion clip never needed.
That suffix describes a radio band. It has nothing to do with the mobile 5G network, and the resemblance has caused a great deal of confusion.
These live in the app, and each carries more consequence than its size suggests.
TWO ROUTES OUT OF THE CAMERA — NEITHER IS REQUIRED FOR LIVE VIEW
On a camera without a screen, that small light carries most of what the device can say about itself. The maker's documentation is model-specific; the pattern below is the general shape.
Non-rechargeable 1.5 V lithium AAs are what the maker specifies, and the reason is temperature. Their voltage holds steady as the cold deepens, where alkalines and rechargeables sag — and a camera reading a sagging cell reports itself empty long before the chemistry is actually spent.
This is also why fresh cells rarely cure a struggling camera. A weak radio link makes the camera work harder and drains whatever is fitted; replacing the batteries buys a little time. The two signal readouts are the more useful place to look.
Distance and masonry both tax a link. A camera that behaved indoors and struggles at its mounted spot is reporting geography, which is exactly what testing at the spot before drilling is for.
Arming enables motion capture; it does not mean continuous filming. These are event cameras — they wake for motion, record a clip, and sleep again.
Not from the manufacturer. As of this guide's review date the app is published for iOS, Android, and Fire OS phones and tablets, with no official Windows, macOS, or browser viewer. Third-party projects and download sites offering one are not the maker's software, and a Blink or Amazon password should not be typed into them.
A Blink account, created in the app, is what setup requires. Linking an Amazon account is offered during setup and can be skipped; it becomes necessary only to activate a storage plan purchased through Amazon.
Not for ordinary use — a Mini joins the Wi-Fi on its own. A Sync Module 2 enters the picture where local clip storage on a USB drive is wanted, or where a particular kit's features call for one. Battery cameras always need the module.
No. Live view and motion notifications work without one. A plan covers cloud storage of recorded clips and related features; local storage through the Sync Module 2 is the alternative. Current terms belong to the maker's site.
