An Independent Guide to the Alexa App

Four checks, all visible before you install anything. The developer name on the listing should be the device manufacturer, Amazon — not an individual or an unfamiliar studio. The install count should be in the hundreds of millions; a listing with a few thousand is not it. The price should be nothing. And the screenshots should show an actual interface rather than stock photographs of speakers.

Where to get it. The store built into your phone — the App Store on iPhone and iPad, Google Play or the manufacturer's own store on Android. Nowhere else. Installation files from websites, forums or file-sharing services are a genuine security risk, and that is not how this app is distributed. We do not host or link to installers, and neither should anyone else.

A note on cost. Setting up a device you already own is free. If anything asks you to pay to complete setup, to install a second app first, or to buy an "activation" of any kind, it is not part of this process.

What the account determines. Which music and media services are available on the device. Which household it belongs to. Which shopping lists, calendars and reminders it can reach. Whose voice preferences and history shape what it does.

In a shared home. Decide deliberately whether the device belongs to one person or to a shared household account. Both are reasonable. What causes friction is drifting into a mixture by accident — two devices on one account, a third on another, and nobody quite sure which is which.

Before you begin. If the account uses a second verification step, have it within reach: the authenticator app, the security key, or the phone that receives the code. Setup pausing while you hunt for a code is the single most common interruption.

What we will never ask for. An account email, a password, or a verification code. No page on this site has a sign-in form and no message from us will ever request one.

Bluetooth is how the app finds the device and opens the first direct connection to it. Without it, the device sitting in front of you is invisible to the app.

Local Network on iPhone, or Nearby Devices on newer Android versions, lets the app communicate with devices on your own Wi-Fi.

Location on Android is the one that raises eyebrows. It is a rule imposed by Android itself, not a choice made by the app: Android treats scanning for nearby Wi-Fi networks as location-adjacent, because the list of networks around you can indicate roughly where you are. Any app that needs to show you a list of Wi-Fi networks must therefore hold location permission. The app is not tracking you to set up a speaker; Android is gating the Wi-Fi scan.

Notifications deliver stage-completion prompts. Declining makes the process feel as though it has stopped when it has not.

Microphone is only for speaking to Alexa from the phone itself. Declining it has no effect on the speaker.

Older phones. Each app version states a minimum operating system version on its store listing, and those minimums rise over time as older releases stop being supported. If your phone cannot install the current version, borrowing a newer phone or tablet for the setup is a normal solution — the device is registered to your account, not to the phone that set it up, so nothing permanent is left behind. Sign out of the app afterwards.
