Most Echo models have no screen, so a ring of light does the talking — and during Alexa setup it is the only feedback the device gives you. This page explains what the colors represent.

Conventions differ by model, generation and software version. The documentation supplied with your own device is the authority; this is background reading.
Orange means setup mode. The device is powered, awake, and waiting to be configured.
It is the expected first state for a device that has not been set up yet, and it persists until setup completes. Nothing is wrong. A brand-new device glowing orange is behaving exactly as designed.
Some models show orange spinning rather than steady while a network connection is being attempted.
Blue is the working color. It generally indicates the device has registered that it is being addressed and is doing something about it.
A rotating blue pattern usually means a request is being processed, or that the device is starting up after being connected to power.
The lighter segment. A common convention pairs a blue ring with a cyan or lighter portion that points roughly toward where the speech came from. Several microphones around the device compare what each one hears, and the difference reveals direction. It is informational, and mostly it is just satisfying to watch.
Red generally indicates the microphone is off — voice capture is disabled and the device is not listening.
On most designs this is a deliberate privacy state that someone has chosen. The device stays powered and connected; it simply does not respond to being spoken to. It is a status, not an error.
Some models also use red to indicate an interrupted network connection. Which meaning applies is model-specific, and the manufacturer's documentation for your device distinguishes between them.

Purple indicates Do Not Disturb is active. Notifications, announcements, calls and messages are held back, while ordinary voice interaction continues to work.
A brief purple flash after a spoken request usually means the request was received while Do Not Disturb was on.
Purple also appears during some setup sequences to indicate that a network step did not complete.
Green relates to calls and messaging.
Pulsing green typically indicates an incoming call. Spinning green typically indicates a call in progress. If a device starts glowing green unexpectedly, someone in the household is usually calling or dropping in from another device.
Yellow means something is waiting for you — a message, a reminder, or a delivery notification. It is informational and persists until the notification is heard or dismissed.
White usually indicates volume; a white segment that grows and shrinks as you adjust volume is the most common use. White also appears on some models to signal a mode change, such as a device joining or leaving a group.
Because the light scheme is a design decision made per product line, and it changes over time.
Different generations have different lighting hardware — a ring of individually controlled lights expresses patterns a simpler indicator cannot. Screen-equipped models show on the display what screenless models must express through color. Conventions also get revised in software updates, and some features exist only in certain countries.
