Same account, same network. The new device must be registered to the same Amazon account as the existing ones, or they will not appear in each other's lists, cannot be grouped, and cannot play audio together. They should also be on the same Wi-Fi network — a device on a guest network or on an extender's separate network may connect fine and still fail to appear alongside the others.

Name it deliberately. By location, in two or three syllables, with no numbers. Kitchen is a good name; Echo Dot 4th Gen stops being true the moment you replace the device. Say the name aloud before committing — it is what you will be saying every day for years.

Names that cause trouble. Anything containing a numeral, because Speaker 2 is ambiguous when spoken. Anything that sounds like another name — Den and Dan's Room will be confused constantly, and so will Study and Studio. Names should differ at the first syllable, not the last.

A device registered to the wrong account has to be deregistered from it and set up again under the intended one. The Alexa app handles both halves. It is annoying rather than serious, and much easier to avoid than to undo — which is why it is worth pausing before signing in during a second device's setup.

The same applies to a device passed on from someone else: until the previous owner removes it from their account, it remains associated with them.

A room ties a device to a physical space. It is what lets an instruction spoken in the kitchen apply to the kitchen without you naming the device.

A group is a named collection of devices addressed together — several speakers for synchronized audio, everything on a floor, or every device in the house for announcements.

Rooms describe where things are. Groups describe how you want to address them collectively. A device sits in one room and can belong to several groups.

Keep the layers distinct. If a device is called Kitchen and a group is also called Kitchen, resolution becomes ambiguous. Give each layer its own vocabulary — device Kitchen Counter, room Kitchen, group Downstairs.

Create a group containing the speakers you want — Downstairs, say, covering kitchen and living room — and music started there plays in both, in step. It is the main practical reason to think about groups at all.

The group name must be distinct from every device name and every room name, or the instruction is ambiguous.

Separate accounts give each person their own music preferences, reminders, calendars and recommendations. One shared account is simpler to manage, but everyone's reminders land in the same place and everyone's listening history mingles.

Neither is wrong. What causes friction is drifting into a mixture by accident. Decide before adding devices rather than after.

What is shared and what is not has changed over time and varies by country, so the manufacturer's current description is worth reading before setting one up.
